FYI

I thought I'd do a little study and keep it simple here.
For your picking enjoyment ...

What-Are-The-Tougher-War-Nickels-Of-The-11-Coin-Series?

I went to the ever changing Numismedia
and copied and pasted
MS 64 & MS 65 values for each of the War Nickels in Uncirculated
and then the same grade with full steps.
Prices can skyrocket for some in the higher grades.

For MS 64 and then MS 65 WITHOUT 5 FULL STEPS

1942 P 13.20 - 21.25
1942 S 15.60 - 23.75
1943 P 9.60 - 15.00
1943 D 10.80 - 15.00
1943 S 12.00 - 17.50
1944 P 12.00 - 20.00
1944 D 12.00 - 17.50
1944 S 10.80 - 16.25
1945 P 10.80 - 17.50
1945 D 10.20 - 16.25
1945 S 9.60 - 16.25

The better dates appear to be 1942 P 1942 S and 1944 P

For MS 64 and then MS 65 WITH 5 FULL STEPS

1942 P 30.00 - 57.50
1942 S 25.20 - 67.50
1943 P 13.20 - 38.75
1943 D 20.40 - 33.75
1943 S 21.60 - 46.25
1944 P 33.60 - 73.75
1944 D 20.40 - 30.00
1944 S 42.00 - 168.75
1945 P 50.40 - 87.50
1945 D 16.80 - 25.00
1945 S 84.00 - 350.00

Clearly the toughest Full Step War Nickels in this grade level would be in this order
1945 S
1944 S
1945 P
1944 P
1942 S
1942 P

So when your out there cherry picking through a batch of War Nickels, maybe this will help you find a real bargain.

A smart use of time.

I have yet to see a single raw high grade 45 S. I look at all I see at every show and never see anything even near a 5FS.

I guess it wouldn't hurt to jot down these better dates for when you go out to a coin show or to a shop where you can look through a quantity of BU war nicks. Just write "want list" on top, no need to tip off the seller what you're up to. You will pay more if you do.
Remember eye appeal is also very important. There are pretty ones and pretty bad ones that still make the grades.

I believe (but don't quote me on that since I don't have my nickel folders in front of me) that I have found every single one of the 35% Ag nickels in circulation EXCEPT any of the D mint marks.

Thanks for the info TNG. I'm not a nickle collector (yet) but this does make it more intriguing.

Great info. Where did the prices come from. I wonder how much differences would show up via different price sources.
