I have an 1873 greek coin I bought at my local flea market for exactly 12 cents. It has extra metal on it that goes all the way through the coin to the other side and I was just wondering if this counts as an error or damage or if my 12 cents was even worth it? thanks malissa Moved to world coin forumEdited by malissadawn 07/17/2008 01:38 am

Get in your car and go back and buy the rest of that sellers stock The coin is a Greek 1 Drachma. It's silver weight is 0.1342 oz. That puts it right about $2.50 in silver value Unfortunately this coin is severally damaged. If the damage wasn't there it'd be worth around $20 in F and $50 in VF I'd say it's a keeper

This not an error. Appears that the jewelry mount has been removed.

jewelry mount? you think this might have been made into jewelry and then taken back apart somehow? I never even considered that. do you think then that maybe there is a safe way to remove the rest of it?

grace, I may just go back because this dealer had a large bin on the counter and you could just take 80 coins for 10.00 (12 cents each) I got lots of old canadian and newfoundland 5 and 10 cents, Buffalo nickels and Indian Head cents not to mention a bunch of other things that were foreign so I dont really know what they are. I have sorted through those bins a few times but never really checked the values on anything until recently and have definitely made profits. almost makes me feel guilty for him but at the same time he is the coin dealer not me. he should know what they are before he sells them. malissa

It would have no bearing on the value of the coin....and by taking it out you'd more then likely damage the coin further.
Leave it in....it makes for an interesting story

malissa, I wouldn't feel guilty about cheery picking in a bin like that at a coin shop. Most coin dealers have one. The price is reasonable to. My coin shop has similar bins at different price ranges. I can get bags of coins (don't get to pick the coins, the bags are pre-made) for 8-10 cents a coin.
Great find on the Drachma!

I have bought coins before that seemed expensive (to me at the time) and then gotten home and looked them up and saw that they were worth 4 or 5 times what I paid. But I have always assumed maybe I am grading too high. I'm learning through this forum that I was actually right and they are worth more and it just surprises me that even a dealer can make a mistake about what they are selling. Though with this dealer I mentioned before he felt that certain coins were "ugly" and therefor less valuable to people. That's usually how I bought a lot of my silver coins, the ones he felt were "ugly" To me its weird, I havent yet seen a coin that I thought was ugly......except of course a lovely xf40 1888 Morgan dollar that my brother in law holed.

lol I wish I could but I have a funny feeling if I tried that I would become the newest paid buyer on the forum. Id spend 20 hours a day sorting through bins and mailing out bags of coins.

well, I think that ultimately fining a good deal depends on the markets in the area and if the dealer really understands what they are selling.
