To answer your question, this happened at the U.S. Mint, so it's technically an error coin. Although, it was very common back in the 1970's and early 1980's for some reason. Somehow, grease and crud gets on the planchets (maybe very dirty surfaces?), causing these line to appear on coins. Did this help? Did it answer your question?  Errers and Varietys.

The difference? The roller lines are only on the surface, while the real woody coins are through the planchet. So when they wear down, the wood grain still shows.   |
