This is not a Woody. These are called Roller Lines. Cool find!

Hi, Bate. Nice coin. Nice album filler as learning tool. E&V, when you stated roller lines, are these done outside of the mint? Thanks...

That's a very good question that you've asked. To answer your question, this happened at the U.S. Mint, so it's technically an error coin. Although, it was very common back in the 1970's and early 1980's for some reason. Somehow, grease and crud gets on the planchets (maybe very dirty surfaces?), causing these line to appear on coins. Did this help? Did it answer your question?

Thanks, E&V for a detailed answer. At least Bate is happy with the coin & other readers will know it's a mint error. Not outside of the mint extra-curricular activity. Your response is well appreciated, E&V. You did well...keep on doing the good work...

The difference? The roller lines are only on the surface, while the real woody coins are through the planchet. So when they wear down, the wood grain still shows.
