Having had several relatives who saw combat in WWII, I always found myself drawn to that period of history. The interest extended to coins and every time I received a WWII era Lincoln Cent in change, it went in a jar. 1944 and 1945 dates dominate, most are VF+, and there are many of them. Now that I am slowly moving out of the hobby, I am wondering if there are any varieties of value, easily identified, that I should look for before I release these into the wild. Are there any that exceed a value threshold of say, $50, that would be worth the search? Thanks!

There are two notable 1944-D/S varieties that are worth looking for.
Rest in Peace

The 1944 D/S overmint mark is one in particular that in higher grades commands a large premium. There are some minor DDO / DDRs, and of course error coins like clipped planchet, Cuds and other mint errors that are all really under your $50 frame. Those were VERY common coins, made from old shell casings that they , had a lot of...ugh. (Most were target practice for the troops/sailors in training, not a whole lot from combat areas, that was trash left on site.)

Thank you, everyone. The info is much appreciated. There are definitely no 1944 steel cents in the mix. I'm not so sure I could ID some of these if they were staring right at me, but I'll take a shot. Thanks, again.
