I found this today and it caught my eye because of the shiny spot. When I put in under my microscope this is what I saw. I am not sure what is going on here.
Its hard to tell if there is something on top of the D, or part of the plating is missing on the D. If plating is missing, it looks like a zinc gas bubble burst in the D mint mark. Just damage, and as air and zinc react, the cent will get worse.
With Fuzzy317. It's Zinc Rot. It's caused by a break in the Copper plating, exposing the Zinc Rot. Once this happens and air reaches the Zinc, the corrosion will eat away at it. I think you had Split Plate Doubling on the mint mark at one point. I think that's why the corrosion process began. http://www.error-ref.com/split-plate-doubling/
