I have decided to start collecting again but my question is what to collect? I'm thinking of going after the silver lunar one dollar coins but is there any other series along these lines that would be cheap ($50-$100 per coin) to obtain or could be expected to increase in worth as the years go on.
I'm thinking as this as a challenge that would take all year or more ($200 per fortnight from centrelink does not spread far).

What to collect depends on what you expect out of the collection. If it is one where capital growth is secondary, then by all means go ahead and collect decimal NCLTs like the slver Lunars.
However, if you are collecting as a form of investment, start looking at predecimal banknotes & coins. Both have proven to be better performers than the decimals. Having said that, it is the high grade predecimals key date issues that are the true performers, the low grade ones have only moved marginally in the past few years. There are also exceptions to this, like the 1932 Florin or the 1925 Penny.
1932 Florins and the 1925 Penny in just the EF grade will cost you many hundreds of dollars. My advice to any new colletor is to look at all the other aspects of enjoyment that this hobby can impart, buy what you can afford at the highest possible grade as you progressively build up your collection.
Cheers....Lim

This is not really a investment sort of thing, rather more that I can say I have all the coins in series x, plus the beauty of some of these coins.
I might get into investment after I finish Uni and get a full-time job.

Then try collecting the decimal 1 & 2 cents coins in full mint red BU or GEM UNC. They are not many to collect, are nice to look at and except for a few, is well within your budget range. The real challenge is in tracking down and then acquiring a full mint red 1968 Two Cents.

I can see what you mean by tracking them down, there is almost nothing on ebay for them. I already have the 1985 one and Two Cent coins, don't know if they are "full mint red BU or GEM UNC" but they are in a hard plastic case with the one dollar and five, ten, twenty and fifty cent coin from the same year, and I reckon they are in excellent condition (in my completely unqualified opinion).

The coins you have described are the ones in the ETY Mint Sets. Coins in Mint sets would have at least a minimum grading of UNC if not better. Mintage of the 1985 Mint sets was 170,000 and was issued at AUD4.20...today, it has a BV of AUD40.00.

I think you need to ask yourself a few questions before deciding what to collect.
* Do you like the historic value of the coins. * Or is more the design of the coins you like. *What countries do you find an interest in. * What is it in the coin you like eg: theme, colour, condition etc.
After you answer these questions a path of collecting becomes more evident.

My advice to all collectors of modern issues is buy because you like...if it makes money then that is a bonus.
I agree with Lars...ask yourself do you want Aussie coins or coins from a particular country.
Do you want decimal or predecimal.
Do you want circulation style or NCLT
Do you want gold, silver, copper or other.
And finally what is your budget.
Then we can narrow things down for you.

Also I have another question, this coin http://cgi.ebay.com.au/Year-of-the-...cmdZViewItem is selling at $28.00 Australian yet similar ones at the mint sell for more, is this a scam?
This one is not a coin but a medallion made in China....stay clear off it...

Try to collect nice looking 999 precious metal coins below metal value. You can't believe how many good buys are out there. (Try to concentrate on proof coins if you are tight on budget.) This is what I do.

The seller actually sells antiques and junk but had come across 3 collectable coins and one of them was the Aussie silver! Did not take me long to jump on that and I was thrilled to see the bid hold up!
