The die is showing Die Deterioration. What does that mean? The die is showing its age. When a die wears the movement is always the same. From the center to the closest rim. Note the date all the areas on the fields are showing the die wear to the right. On LIBERTY the closest rim is to the left. So note the Die Deterioration in that direct to the left. On the motto, the closest direction on these is the tops of the devices. So it not a doubled die. The die is actually a normal die. But with continued use, the die is now showing die wear just like all the other dies before they were retired. (Just a normal event)

Same thing on the reverse die as well.

If you ever get better images of this coin I would like to add them to my educational image files. Great example to show this on both side of the coin. You might want to save it for educational purposes when you run into new collectors. (The images have a lot of glare. Just use a diffuser on the images to remove the glare.

Yep, just heavy Die Deterioration (die wear). Not a Doubled Die. This was caused by the strike. A Doubled Die would be caused by movement in the hubbing process, causing doubled images on the die itself.

Edit: here's what severe Die Deterioration looks like, when the die is not retired in a timely manner.
