I found this 1964 D LMC and I am unsure of what may be going on with it. The crack starts at the base of the rim and goes straight down the bust below the check line. It does not show through the rim or does not show on the reverse. I am thinking this is a scratch but it is unusual in the fact that it runs the way it does. Insight please.

If it is incuse, then it would be a scratch.
A die crack would be raised and not that straight.

I'm thinking that too David. It's just kind of odd that it starts at the top of the collar, runs downhill and over the bust to the cheek line. It is incuse like a scratch but almost like a fissure.

I agree with you Jim. It's pretty weird and odd though. I've seen weird scratches like this before too. Maybe to exposed metal got toned overtime maybe, causing the scratch to look like that?

You are probably right. Again, I'm inclined to think of it as just a scratch.

I remember finding these years ago. I feel it is something on the stock material. Note how it wore off the raised spot on the head. (Last image) If may have been like a marking line on the material. Kind of like the rolling lines, but just a long straight line. No premium. Just wonder what caused it for sure?

Thank for the insight Mr. Coop. That does make sense as if it could be a marking line.

So Coop, it could be something that got into the stock material? I have seen this before as well, just didn't know what it was.

I can't think of anything during the mint processes why they would add it to a coin. So I figured it probably happened before.

It will remain a mystery, until someone finds out why it happens

I'm definitely going to keep hoping one day to find out what happened. The more I think of it the more I believe this is some type of scoring mark.
