Png---Wrong-Planchett

Png---Wrong-Planchett

The coin at the top is a normal 2 toea coin of Papua New Guinea.

The second one is a well circulated coin of the same year but struck on a wrong planchett. I have tried for quite sometime to find out where this wrong planchett would have come from. So far, I am none the wiser.

The coin is about the size of your 1 cent piece but weighs only 0.7 grams.

Do you know what mint produced the PNG pieces during this time? That will help narrow down the possibilities. Also, what year is the wrong planchet piece dated.

Without having the exact dimensions, I can throw a couple guesses at you:

India 2 paisa (1965-1981)
Seychelles 5 cents (1972,75,76,77) (mostly made by the British Royal Mint)

Hi kuhli,

Png---Wrong-Planchett

I should have posted the obverse of this coin as well. To give you an idea of the size, the coin is enclosed in a 25mm 2 X 2 holder.

Because of the scalloped planchett, my guess is Seychelles or might even be the Phillipines.

Not the Philippines. The only scalloped coins from there were the 5 sentimo pieces, which were brass. The Seychelles pieces are aluminum. I am assuming by the color and your notation of the light weight that your piece is indeed aluminum.

Another possibility I overlooked would be the Sri Lanka 2 cent piece, issued in 1975.

Confirm it is aluminium. I have not thought about Sri Lanka. Will look through whatever I have on what is Ceylon in those days.

Many thanks kuhli...

What will solve this mystery is to obtain confirmation that the 2 cents coin of Ceylon and this 2 toea PNG issue was both struck in the same Mint....Royal Mint?
