I am a new member and the post I have read have been great. I have been trying to find out more about the star designation from NGC. I am not a novice collector and I have read NGC comments about the definition, but I have not been able to get a specific answer from anyone about NGC star designation. I know it is all eye appeal, but does anyone know what characteristics/attributes qualify. I can understand it sorta for a toned coin, but what about a white coin?

NGC's star designation is given to coins with tremendous eye appeal. Any coin that is nicely toned, is bright white(for silver coins) or has a nice patina is up for star designation. When sending a coin in to be graded at NGC you shouldn't expect your coin to come back with a star on the label but if the coin is beautiful enough it is possible. -PP

nice eye appeal is what they say it means and can and usually does mean its nicely toned, sometimes white coins get the star because they are close to the next grade but just fall a little short of the requirements of that next grade up and they give it a star. But usually its toned coins that you usually see with the star designation on them

It seems to also be random because what might be a star to the graders might not be a star to you and vise versa.

Loved the Sneetches!! Check out my latest post and see if anyone thinks it has "Star Quality". It is likely my most attractively toned Roosevelt.
