I recently ordered one (proof) from their online shop - on July 1. Since July 2, the order has been listed as "in stock and reserved". No bill on my bank card yet, but there is a hold.

The only eagle I would get straight from the mint is a proof version. I would think that you'd have more of a garentee of the coins condition uppon shipment, and you would also get the mint case whereas if you bought it at a coin shop or dealer you may just get the proof coin in an air-tight container and nothing else.

I only have one silver eagle, a 1995 uncirculated. I picked it up at my coin shop for 17 dollars. A deal I would say.

Proofs are the only Silver eagles that are available from the mint each year!
except for some special commemorative mintages from time to time.

the Unc's are sold to Silver brokers who are contracted through the mint forsale to wholesalers and retailers .

The mint did the same thing with me on an Aniversary Set. They are probably behind on the shipping along with the stamping of the blanks. nlp

Then why can I go on the mint website right now and buy an uncirculated silver eagle for $25.95? Or does the mint send the order to a contractor they sold all their eagles too and then you actually get the coin shipped to you from the contractor?

Then the coin is a special mintage not a regular Unc .

The regular production coins are not sold by the mint to the general public .

This coin ?

Please read the description ! struck on special burnished blanks and struck at the west point mint !

Metalman, I think Elimist is talking about the burnished die eagles. There are three different eagles available to collectors.

From the mint directly, you can buy either the proof or the burnished die silver eagle, both have the W mint mark.

The siler eagle available from distributors only in the reg. Uncirculated eagle with no mint mark.

Man, I think I've participated in three different threads about silver eagles, every time thinking that I know what I'm talking about, and all three times coming out of it learning something new.

The last couple of years, I started buying the Proofs from the Mint......this year I also bought the "burnished" Uncirculated.
I've been having a lot of opportunities to put together a complete set of these from coin auctions and estate auctions, etc. etc., but haven't taken the opportunity to do it yet. Sensing that I might want to within the next year or so.....I began buying these. I have several from years past and so it's already started....might as well complete it right ?
I also like the Silver Proof Sets......last couple of years I've bought those too.
I'm not above ordering a couple Uncirculated rolls of Kennedy half dollars or Sac's as well each year.
The American Legacy Sets are attractive too. (and I'm anxious to see what this years set will look like)
The Uncirculated Dollar sets are nice.
The U.S. Mints Commemorative coins are beautiful coins too....esp. this year with the Bald Eagle depictions...
And of course, I feel led to get the regular ole' proof sets....

Did I forget anything ?........yeah....I don't mind ordering from the Mint !
Ultra Moderns are not coins to be hated on and shunned in my opinion.
Classic coins are my passion.....but I don't limit myself there.....a beautiful coin is a beautiful coin......it's not always about how much you can sell something for !
