I purchased the 2018 Canada $1 Special Edition Proof Dollar 100th Anniversary of the Armistice of WWI. When I received the coin, I immediately saw the obvious defect on the obverse. At first I thought it was a particle from the capsule so I opened it to verify but unfortunately this was clearly caused by some kind of debris (strike-through error). So I returned the coin, noting the details of the defect on the returned paperwork. Well, guess what... the replacement coin arrived today and it's the same coin! I just need to chill right now. I deleted an entire paragraph of frustration because I can't contain myself... so I'll just end my post here and wait for others to chime in.

Not surprised that this happened. So much for quality control.
Good luck with another attempted exchange. This time you need to speak with a manager.
By the way, no need to delete your frustration. Many of us can relate, but this incident has got to be worst.

I gave up on the RCM, and I was a member of the Masters Club at one point... Took 3 phone calls and 2 emails for them to change the address on a coin set subscription I had, they kept mailing them to my old California address. One of the items never got returned, so I had to pay for it a second time. They are flooding the market with junk (glow in the dark, are you kidding me!) as far as I am concerned, kind of like when the baseball card thing went crazy in the 90's and flooded the market with 100's of special sets or special cards and a lot people gave up and quit collecting new cards. I'll just continue to get my annual Maple Leaf from my dealer because you can't even get them from the RCM.

Did you get the same COA? If the coin has a different COA, it is possible more than one coin has the same error. So in reality you did not get the same defective coin but another defective coin.

very good point Money Penney. Perhaps they have a defective die.

Good catch, guys, with the COA. Interesting the fact: the person in RCM (warehouse?) just took the coin for replacement, without even opening and checking.

I didn't write down the initial COA and quite honestly it doesn't matter either way. Statistically, it has to be the same coin.
I find it hard to believe that the same defect would get into my hands - twice. Perhaps if I had purchased 2 coins at the same time, maybe.
The error is so obvious that I can see it without my reading glasses. I find it hard to believe that QA could miss that - even with one eye closed...
But worst of all... Here's a customer returning a coin due to poor quality... hey, let's make sure we double-check the coin this time!

canadian_coins, I understand your frustration. I return coins often to RCM, because I can always find some visible imperfections. Later I learnt cheaper silver coins always have more defects. And RCM doesn't hide this fact: you can return it at your own time; but they don't care much if you are angry or not - there is a process for that. There are several occasions I got good coins from CC&C. Because CC&C always does QA for each coins they received from RCM. Perhaps having a good representative at CC&C also helps.

I also want to add a good experience I had when returning a coin to RCM. A couple of months ago, I returned the 3-oz maple leaf silver coin to RCM due to a visible imperfection. I forgot to include the COA; the coin was part of a subscription with a free box and I left the COA in the box. RCM could have rejected my return. Instead, RCM sent me back a better coin without a COA.

I just returned the flawed coin today, but for a full refund this time around. It's been quite a ride since the early 70's... but that's pretty much where the bus stops for me. I won't be buying from the RCM again.

A sad turn of events for a long-time collector/RCM customer. It seems to me, at times, that the RCM has lost its way and has veered too far off the road in the name of "innovation." Yes, new collectors need always to be attracted with new ideas, but losing sight of what is at the core of many long-term collectors is dangerous business. As is letting quality and customer service suffer while the very same are being touted as "world class." The supply of collectors is not endless, and neither is their appetite for design repetition and gimmicks that stretch and/or break the definition of "coin."

Very well put commems
Your words explain exactly why I haven't purchased a coin in over three years and have lost all interest and desire to pursue this collecting hobby. Sad!

Thank you commems.
The badest part is that my rep never put his pants on, despite the 1000's I've spent over the years.
So sad.
