Here's a new acquisition, graded by PCGS. These Charlotte coins were often poorly-struck, on planchets that were not always of top quality. I think the major TPGs take this into account and tend to be a bit more forgiving with these coins. What grade do you think PCGS assigned to this little lady?

I'll say AU55 but only because of your comments. For some reason I don't see this as more than an EF coin though.

Jaobler, that is a beautiful piece!
My grading skills on gold are poor at best, and there is a lot of forgiveness for the C and D mints so.......... I'll guess au-58 to ms60.

Tights, your instincts were right on. This is an EF piece, actually "choice" (XF-45) per PCGS. I think a grade of EF-40 would be more appropriate since in-hand the coin seems to have only faint traces of original luster. I would expect more luster on an accurately-graded EF (or XF) 45 coin. I think it's likely the coin was dipped and that impaired the luster a bit, but if so the effect was slight enough that PCGS didn't have a problem with it.
