Good afternoon,

I have an old family 1911coin passed down from my grandma, it was her birth year given to her by her parents. She thought she couldn't spend it because the coin looks so unlike a penny, but since it had gold in it she always kept it for good luck. I can't find any information on this being a known error. Only thing I was able to find was that rarely coined jammed in the coining press without being rejected before a new coin was introduced. Is this something I should think about submitting for grading as a odd error or is it just a damaged coin?

Any feedback would be appreciated!
Sincerely Coinfused

Just looks like some damage that exposes the brightness of the copper

to the funny farm!!

I'm going to guess that was mounted on something that just may have been painted with gold paint, or a metal object that had a gold wash on it. the substance is most likely a glue residue, notice how flat and even it is.

The substance isn't really "gold" or if it is, is a very low grade of jewelry gold (24k flake). It could be removed by a bath in pure acetone, but because of the sentiment, I'd just leave it alone. YOU know the Provence of the coin, that's what matters. It may not be a very valuable coin in that condition (unless it is a S Mint coin), but to you it's priceless!

PS: Show both sides of coins when you post, sometimes we spot things you don't!

Agree that adhesive residue likely accounts for most of the appearance, with perhaps a bit of PMD caused when the coin was removed from its original backing.

Try to post the obverse (front) photo.

Looks like a gold colored film mostly flaked off already. The top right quadrant looks to be a gold colored film flaking/peeling off. I don't see evidence it was ever mounted as a piece of jewelry. There are what appear to be gouges in the coin surface in the top left quadrant.

Back in her day they used to take a jar and put something on the outside edge to cover the glass to make it look thicker. Let that dry and put on a second coat and put odds and ends to the outside of the jar. I know my grandmother had one. I remember an old rust pocket knife on it, buttons, coins or what every accumulated. Then they would use if as a vase for real flowers or artificial ones.

It's just Post Strike Damage (it happened after it left the U.S. Mint) unfortunately.
