1970-S-LMC-DDR-Or-Machine-Doubled?

Outlined is normal size letter, what does that mean?

It means the RULE!

Hub Doubling ALWAYSINCREASES the device size...
Mechanical Doubling ALWAYSDECREASES the device size...period!

Just some MD, as stated above by coop and Crazy. A DD will increase the size of the devices, while with MD the devices are the same size with just a doubled shelflike look.

It's Machine Doubling, since the devices are reduced in size. http://www.error-ref.com/machine-doubling/

More food for thought. I agree in this case, but had we been looking at incused devices the increase and decrease rule flips around. Thanks, Doug.

Don't forget you can have MD on a doubled die.
1970-S-LMC-DDR-Or-Machine-Doubled?
So you end up with enlarged and reduced devices on the same coin.

And some types of MD does increase the size called push doubling.

So what now? Always look for the pushed area. The flat shelf like, step down area. That will be your clue. The dies area will all show the same color as it is flat. The contour has been removed.

Or look for what I call snow plow look on devices. When the MD happens it pushes the devices out of its way making the debris to rise above the devices.

So when we make a rule on something, keep in mind there are exceptions to the rules. Why? Because MD doesn't play by the rules. It does it own thing.
