*** Edited by Staff to Add Year / Mintmark / Denomination to Title. Titles are Important! ***Found this today & the mint mark stuck out like a sore thumb. It's huge & looks nothing like any other 88d I've ever seen. No split serifs & does not match any rpm listed. Doesn't seen to match any D mint styles here either, especially for what's posted for that year. http://www.varietyvista.com/01b%20L...20Styles.htmAnother oddity it that it's higher than most of the whole obverse design, definitely the date. Out of spite I did some looking around at other coin MM & this comes close but IMO, that's reaching. http://www.varietyvista.com/09b%20W...20Styles.htmSo, on that note, what are your thoughts / No it's not an rdv6 Comparison 88D Jim's 88D from previous thread Edited by wrongnumber 08/03/2018 02:29 am

I'm thinking that circulation flattening from circulation wear has caused the mint mark to appear bigger in size.

You should include the date, mintmark, and the denomination in your titles.

EV , its not flattened. Yes it does look like it took a hit on the vertical bar but it's close to twice the height of the date. Doesn't match an 88d mint mark I've ever seen & ive been on a hunt for 88/89 reverse hardcore.

Someone just posted an 88 with the same issue and I think it was determined at was possibly MM that was just punched in a little farther than normal. Coop chimed in with an answer I just don't remember exactly what it was. But I'm pretty sure it wasn't anything unusual

Post edited to add comparisons. Looking at 3 different dies here. I can agree that whoever set the MM had a heavy hand, but to my eye , the MM is a different style & size.

Well this mint mark doesn't look like any of the Denver mint marks. (1-12) So keep it safe for now. If more turn up, it might be something?

Really don't know coop. Definitely have it aside just in case. Haven't come across anything like that in all the 88s I've looked at. I appreciate your insight & skepticism of it.

Well it might be a new punch? Or it maybe something I'm not thought about yet. if you can find more with different locations of the mint mark, then it would be a new MMS punch. (Or another MMS that was used that year?)

If the inside of the D is higher than the fields around it then it is a deeply punched mint mark. That actually is a variety.

Only a variety if there is spread that is visible. Not a RPM.
