Can't tell if this is a 1942 P or D Wheat penny. I'm seeing a D stamped on the 9. The 42 D (2) in 1942 looks different than 42 of Denver

It's PMD
It's been struck with something, you can see the misplaced metal.

The mark is incuse. If a 'D' was punched into the die, then it would be raised, not incuse. Just a contact mark.

I can see why you would ask. Your coin is a Philly mint with no MM and the formation you see on the lower part of Nine, although looks like a D, in fact it is a damage the lower part of the Nine has taken a hit and the metal has been displaced in a circular fashion resembling a D.

It's Post Strike Damage (it happened after it left the U.S. Mint), not an error. The 9 took a well placed hit, causing the metal to get pushed over and flattened. It from Philadelphia, not Denver.
