I have 2 1962 US Franklin half dollars and would like to know what are the grading guidelines for uncirculated to ms65. Also in my coin book there is a extra grading column that says ms65-fbl. what is that?

thanks

From the ANA grading standards book:

MS60: No wear, but has blemishes more oblivious than 63. May lack full mint luster and surface may be dull, spotted or heavily toned

MS63: No wear,Attractive luster, has noticeable detracting contract marks or minor blemishes

MS65: No wear, nearly as perfect as an MS67 except for some small blemishes. Has full mint luster but may be unevenly toned or lightly fingermarked. May be weakly struck in one or two small spots. A few barely noticeable nicks or marks may be present.

MS67: Flawless but has a few imperfections.

It didn't list any of the in between grades.

Hope this helps.

Oh, I'm an idiot...I forgot to answer your question...FBL stands for full bell lines.

It doesn't really say anything on FBL. I don't really know this area, but I believe that the horizontal lines on the reverse on the bell are complete and don't have any breaks in them. It's another way to show the difference between a weakly struck coin or not. Your best bet would be to go to coins.ha.com and go to the half dollar area and look for coins that are specifically FBL and compare them with you own, since you can use the zoom feature on it.

well I looked at the same years as mine and mine seem to have more detail in the lines than theirs do. Maybe I'm just biased because their mine. lol

No problem. It's a good site because they keep achieves of all the coins they sell so just sign up(free) and you can also see what prices items sold for. Good source to see what your coins are actually worth.

i hope this doesn't sound a little duh.........do you think full bell lines means that you can read the tiny LINES of text across the bell? Cause I went in thinking that it meant just lines across the bell or bell detail

Not a dumb question because I never knew this either. FLB are the actual lines on the bottom of the bell(I think there's two of them). Those are the lines that they're talking about. In fact, I used to think that by FBL, they meant the crack on the bell, lol.

FBL is a condition, in which the lower set of lines on the Liberty bell are fully visible
