Hi All,

I was wondering if there is a good source to learning about the formation of the various US Mints. Also, any special stories related to them in terms of US coinage.

Thanks --

Zohar

There's a very detailed book, US Mint and Coinage by Don Taxay which covers the beginnings of the very first mint in Philadelphia into the 20th C. It was fascinating reading--I'd recommend to any collector.

I don't know of any comprehensive book that goes into detail about all the mints, but I have Douglas Winter's books on the Charlotte and Dahlonega mints. These provide excellent information primarily about the coins themselves but they do give some history about the mints. Mr. Winter has I believe also published additional books on Carson City and New Orleans coins.

I just got a nice little paperback book on ebay, called "Mintmark CC" that gives detailed history and some nice photos of the Carson City mint. I found it very informative and it was an enjoyable read.

I recently read History of the United States Mint and Its Coinage by David W. Lange, definitely a good read.
