Hi all,

I've seen some comments lately referring to "late die state". What exactly does this mean?

Hi,

This refers to the condition of a die used to strike coins and the progression of the deterioration of the die itself.

Basically, the more coins struck by a die, the more worn the die becomes.

So there are phrases, like Early Die State, Middle Die State, Late Die State and some combinations thereof that are applied when describing the appearance of a coin that was struck. You may see the initials used. EDS, MDS and LDS.
I hope that Helps a little,

Thanks,
Bill

Thanks, Bill.

I always wondered what those initials stood for when I saw them on coppercoins.com

There is also a VLDS (Very Late Die State) also. On these coins you see the fields/devices snowdrifting because of the extreme die wear. Some years are very bad for this the 1953-55 era is probably the most known.

Click on image to get a better view. This coin is not worn, it is a BU.
