@angleina, first welcome to CCF. Second, while often times missing design elements can be an indication that a coin was struck through a grease-filled die, in your case this coin looks like one side has been preferentially worn down as the obv rim is missing as well. I'm not 100% sure about this and will be interested to read what others think as they weigh in on this thread.

With the full rims on the reverse, the obverse ones had to be there to form them. So the coin was altered and sanded down.

Chase, the Obverse side has been intentionally damaged. Possibly sanded down.
