It's slashed into the penny, as in its not just a surface scratch, it's an actual cut.

Coin wrapper damaged. When the roll was crimped closed, the tightening damaged that outside coin.

Just face value. They will be the first cents to expire in time. If you put the coin into acid, you can speed up the process. If you do. Take before/during/after images. I'll add them to my files.

I just found a new 2023 p penny with a deep gouge like this, but it was in the middle of the roll. A brand new roll of uncirculated coins from my bank. Strange.

I was confused why SilverCents, who knows his stuff very well, was posting such an obvious question, then I saw the date! Always cool to look back and see how much we've learned. I got started in the hobby not long after SilverCents did, based on the date of this thread.

The date got me too, (until I caw Coop's reply) then had to check on the date too.
that roll you got this cent in may be new, but most likely not the first roll it was in.

Not sure, he is not responding to emails from me, but then last I heard, he was having computer issues and could not get online..
