An excellent addition to your medievals, Ron. Can definitely see the Venetian influence here.

Thanks Bob, what I about it was that on the obverse it has influence from the Byzantines with Christ Pantokrator and the Greek IC-XC and on the reverse the influence of Western and Latin Europe.

Great pick-up Ron! In looking at my Youroukova and Penchev, I'm about 90% convinced that your attribution to Terter I is correct. You definitely have the right time period though. I see the XC and IC on the obv and DVX on the rev, but can't quite make out the remaining letters that you have indicated. Maybe since the design is copied from Venice, the letters are a bit degraded?

Thanks Dave. The reverse lettering is a bit difficult to read but the letter count seems to match. You have a copy of Youroukova and Penshev, where can I get a copy?

No my book is in Bulgarian and I have exactly zero knowledge of this language which limits me to comparing pictures. Not that dis-similar from Kopicki (Polish) or several other of my books.

Very neat coin!

I was able to find an image of the Bulgarian Gros of this ruler in CoinArchives attributed as Youroukova & Penchev 160. Consistent with the earlier comments, the lettering is quite different :
Georgi-Terter-I-King-Of-Bulgaria

Whereas the lettering on the coin from CoinArchives is a faithful representation of the Venetian lettering for a Giovanni Dandolo grosso, the reverse lettering on yours looks more like random letters (except for DVX). I see a couple of Ds on the right side, and maybe a V, E O, I and D on the left? Any chance these look more like Greek letters than gothic?

It's an imitation of the Dandolo type so I would expect the lettering not to match very well. As Dave has said above the only reference on these is in Bulgarian so their isn't much information available.

Also contemporary with the Bulgarian Dandolo imitations, there were Serbian imitations under King Stefan Uros.
The legend on left side of the reverse would read VROSIVS. The first three letters on your coin could be VRO, but the remaining letters do not look correct. Also, the lettering between the two figures on the reverse would be REX on the Serbian types.
You can take a look here are a clear example of this type.

(I am bothered that a perfect match has not yet been found!)

It is difficult to read the legend. I can make out what looks like V B or R O I E? on the left side. I know there where anonymous types of this coin struck. Could this be one?
