I am working on the clad portion of a Washington quarter album. I have been filling it mostly with mint and proof sets I've opened.

Is opening these four sets a waste of potential value or should I do it to get some nice examples for my album?

I cut mine open and put them in my albums. I know there are a lot of people that will say don't do that, but I did. I also wanted mint sets in my albums.

If it's just quarters you're going for, there are many nice raw examples fairly cheap. Now if you plan on using the other coins, then may be worth it to bust 'em loose.

I guess I could try to finish the set without opening them, and if it gets down to those four and I can't find any, then do it.

Best approach, I think.

I would not cut them open, I'd leave them intact. I had a couple 82 and 83 souvenir sets and they sold for a surprising amount of money. The 82 for more than the 83. I would just buy the singles you need and leave the sets alone.

My opinion is that if you are collecting them for your enjoyment then bust them out. I don't think they are going to gain any significant value over time. If you think that you will ever sell them and want to get a slight premium over a circulated collection it is arguably easier to demand a premium if they are still in mint packaging. If put in any decent album they should not wear or degrade any worse or better than mint packaging. CuNi Clad coins are very tolerant of normal atmosphere.

If you need to fill an album, in order to complete it, I would break it out of the set.

Just sayin' of course you'll also have the other better singles if you cut it up.
It's your choice but since you asked, that is what I would do. I'd like to see pics of your sets please.

Considering the 82 and 83 souvenir sets are already scarce sets I wouldn't.

I'm ambivalent on this subject. On the one hand the coins are made to be collected so display them however you choose. On the other the packaging for these dates is relatively stable so the advice to always cut up sets and soak the coins doesn't apply as strongly.

Most modern mint sets get busted up because no one cares about them but these dates are busted up in huge quantities to make date/ denomination sets. With mintages between 10 and 20 thousand there can't be many left of these.

I've cut up some myself but only bad sets with one nice coin.

Update: I am negotiating with a seller to hopefully trade my souvenir sets for the remaining clad P D and S examples I need.

When I finalize things I will update again. I decided cutting them open did not make sense. But since I really want to complete my album I feel like this was a good solution.
