This Indian is graded by ANACS. Any guesses on the assigned grade?

Hmmphh, now it's time for me to be wrong. Confusing to me actually. The headress up top and where it goes into the band to me should show more wear than it does judging by the cheek wear and above the eye and in the hair. I also think there is a little wear on the eagles chest, but no rub near the eagles head.... It's almost like this was in a necklace setting or something where the raised rim was protecting the outside ares of the coin and the center would see rub just from someone turning it over and over looking at it or adjusting it....But I see no clasp marks or anything of the sort. Ok, ummmm, I'll say AU50 for the high side in case it's just some form of weak strike. Otherwise I would go with VF35 due to what looks like considerable wear on the cheek and hair.

Well, either my photos stink or it's really hard to grade these coins (maybe both!). This is a mint state eagle with no visible wear and full cartwheel luster. IMO the surfaces have fewer bagmarks than most BU Indian eagles. I purchased this one about 10 years ago when it was in a PCGS MS-61 holder. I cracked it out to put it in an album. I eventually decided I'd rather have it in a slab after all and sent it to ANACS. They upgraded it to MS-62. Obviously, if it had been cleaned or mounted for jewelry neither PCGS nor ANACS detected the problem.

Thanks for the update. Just shows how much I stink at this game.... I think next time I will need to peruse Heritage to see some other examples before I speak/write. Apparently the hair above the cheek and ear are always that "weak" and show lack of detail. I should have went with my gut and just focused on the head dress and "liberty" and it would have led me down the correct path. Oh well. Buy some more gold Jaobler so we can keep practicing.

Tights, I would not be so hard on yourself. I think the second pic in the holder displays the coin much better.

Yeah tights, I found the same thing. I'm often too harsh or too liberal if I don't look at some examples on heritage first, and I have noticed others to be similar.

Am happy I didnt see this post before because I would say AU53-MS61 with option for ex jewelry as well. I love the eagle from the neck up... Very very nice sharp face, which is banged in many of them... same goes to the neck feather, simply awesome. the wing, way too soft for my taste, especially on 1914P which many times show perfect details. I'll try to find some samples later tonight...

OK, here is a good sample, ngc ms63, note to the soft neck, almost bold compere to your nice feather, wavy lines, yet still the shoulder is pretty nice, for such a baldy example. (all with the limitation of pictures of course) on another note of curiosity, approximately how much did it run for 10 yrs ago ? Image: 1914.jpg32.74 KB

I paid $440 for this coin in 1997. As I recall, the price of gold at the time was in the $350/ounce range.
