Boy malissadawn, If you are considering purchasing this coin I would pass. This is a pretty common date. Almost 20,000,000 minted.
I would think it is only worth the melt value

really? in my coin book it says there are only 657,000 minted and puts g4 value at $100. Now I feel really confused. DO different books print different mintages?

Hi Malissa,

I think WWhitman missed the "S" mint mark in your title. Your mintage figures match my guide.

As for the grade....I will wait for the experts...

Grade w/o hole F12~15; with hole "no grade" damaged. I assume you meant what would a grading firm assign. None of the reputable companies will slab a holed coin. If you could get this for close to melt value, go ahead (unless you already own it ). For the purists in the collecting community, this coin is "damaged goods" and has no collector value. On the other side of the coin (pun intended) there is a growing community that accepts and collects holed coins, especially rarer dates. I have several in the "seated series" that I got for minimal investment.

I already own this one! My brother in law put the hole in to wear it on a chain sometime in the 80's. Very unfortunate. When I saw it I put my foot down and told my husband that if his mother or brothers had anymore coins that he needed to bring them to me because I wasn't sure they were being taken care of. Sure enough, a few days later he showed up with a big sandwich bag with a pile of unwrapped coins at the bottom. Lots of scratches and damage but at least they won't get any worse.

The "flock of seagulls" hair-do, the cure guy-liner & the french-rolled (pegged) acid washed pants with pleats wasn't enough!

He had to make a fashion statement with a semi-key Morgan dollar around his neck......

If you listed it on ebay, I would guess it would sell for more than melt. It might not go to $100, but I bet there are a few people who would like to pay $50 or $60 to fill a hole in there album.

If a 1916D Mercury dime had a whole in it but it was geniune I would pay more than melt for it.

But that is just a guess...

see thats what I was thinking too. I mean in g4 condition without the hole it would be worth $100.00 and though its hard to tell in the pictures because of the toning, it's closer to at least a vf30 IMO. so that would make it worth about 220.00 without the hole. I cant imagine just selling it for 20 worth of silver. I mean if the hole doesn't bother me that much I'm sure there are others out there like me.

Malissa,

You missed my final comment

There are a large number of folks out there who will pay much more than melt for a holed coin for various reasons, i.e., to fill a hole until they can afford an undamaged example. I have two holed examples in my Seated half dollar collection. Both are AU coins that I can't afford at the present time in that high grade other than holed.
