Hi,

This is my counterfeit dollar that I bought at a flea market. Yes, I knew it was a fake but I'd never seen a fake before and thought it was interesting. I paid 25 cents or so if I remember correctly.

Nice purchase. I think it's worthwhile for every collector to have one or two counterfeits in their collection, as learning tools. Yours is an excellent (if a little obvious) example. The softness of the strike and weak areas stand out, but the overall look could easily fool a new collector. You'll find yourself talking about this one fairly often.

thanks. I figure it was worth the 25 cents to make sure no one else tried to buy it or sell it as real.

Very cool! I think 25 cents is a good price. With all of those counterfeit posts, I should post mine up.

Interesting fake. I'm glad that the dealer sold it as a fake and didn't claim it was real. When I was in Spain a few weeks back I saw so many street venders selling fake coins.

well.......to be honest I am a VERY blunt person. He had it in a binder with all the other trade and Morgan dollars and I just asked him "how much are you selling this piece of crap for?" I think that made it obvious he wasn't going to get one by me. LOL

For 25 cents? I'd go back and buy a few dozen. People collect fakes and you could possible make a very nice profit if sold correctly

I never really thought about that.
My mother did have a strange experience in the 1980's with a coin. My father was helping tear down and old hotel and underneath the foundation he found a coin. He and my mother spent some time trying to figure out if it was real gold or not and then took it to a dealer. The dealer told them it was definitely a counterfeit coin but offered them 900.00 for it!! She of course didn't sell it because it made her wonder right away why he'd offer so much if it's fake. Maybe I can get her to let me post a picture of it on here.

Just because it was a counterfeit doesn't mean it wasn't real gold. And some counterfeits do have collectible value as well. (Think of the Brasher Lima Style Doubloon. It is a counterfeit spanish colonies doubloon perporting to be from Lima Peru and made by Brasher. It is not as famous as his other doubloon but if you were to find one you would be sitting pretty!)

when I bought my dollar I was pretty sure it wasn't worth very much. however it has been a great conversation starter but I did't realise that there was such strong feelings about fakes as copies have been around since people started making things. However, nice to see that some people can have enjoyment for collecting coins without such an attachment to value

my mom's counterfeit is an 1851 20 Dollar California gold piece. On the crown it says BALDWIN, where most coins say LIBERTY. This dealer did a metal test for her apparently and told her it isn't gold. He said there were 3 identifiable metals and 1 metal that he couldn't identify. I'm still trying to get her to take it out and let me take a picture but has anyone ever seen one like this? It would have been buried under the hotel somewhere in the late 1800's or early 1900's and was dug up in the early 80's.

Malissa that sounds familiar...maybe it was a private gold or territorial...found one in the Red Book value in EF...$300,000 but that's for the gold one.

ok so here's some pics of the baldwin. I find it funny that the face and hair more resemble the 1851 5 dollar gold coin than the 20 dollar. Still, It would have had to have been made at least 100 years ago so I guess they tried their hardest. lol

This link has some good info-

This guy is asking 10k for his-

If you look in the 2009 Red Book it is pictured in there with a value of 300K (page 369). It does say it was made with a 2% copper alloy which could be why it is colored that way(if it is real!)

Wow his coin looks exactly like mine. He wants almost 10 thousand for it. It,s the only coin I saw in his online store and he,s been selling on line since 2004. The color is exactly as pictured on his reverse. I had the coin since 1977, or so and the 1982 world coin book then listed it for 110 thousand. Well thanks Malissa for getting the coin image shown and thanks everyone for the information. I never realized a counterfit could be of value.
