Very nice purchase and congratulations for taking it home for 5 dollars! I'd say it would grade at MS-65 as a good guess. http://www.lincolncentresource.com/...g_Guide.html

Yes there is a vintage mall near my house and the elder gentleman who runs it put his collection out every once in a while for cheap. I bought 35 LWC's all look BU for 25 Cents a piece except this 09 was $5.

Seeing it has a fingerprint on the reverse would that make it an AU cent?

You think acetone would take it off or is it baked in?

Mark, I was thinking the same thing as well too! Although according to Lincolncentresource.com, it's says this.

Quote:
MS-65 Uncirculated No trace of wear; nearly as perfect as MS-67 except for some small blemish. Has full mint luster but may be
unevenly toned or lightly fingermarked. A few minor nicks or marks may be present. http://www.lincolncentresource.com/...g_Guide.html

My only question is though, is a coin still considered circulated (AU condition), even if it only has a very light fingerprint and nothing else?

I don't think fingerprints preclude it from being MS. The fingerprint on OP's coin is there to stay, unless you wanna dip it.

Oh okay. I get it spruett. Thank you for answering my question! Although, fingerprints on Mint State coins though are personally less desirable to me. I rather have a Mint State coin with no fingerprints at all, not even a light one.

It is my understanding that TPG standard is, a fingerprint prevents a gem grade. A fingerprint is not circulation wear, so it IS still MS, but it won't make a 65 or above.

That's a given. While they may not make an MS coin automatically grade AU, they will affect technical grade within the range. And, of course, they will always lower value (sometimes significantly).

I don't know of anyone who specifically collects coins with fingerprints. If someone did, though, it would be too easy to cheat. Buy a bunch of pristine coins (preferably copper), place a big juicy fingerprint on it and wait.

When I started coin collecting many, many, many years ago the definition of an uncirculated coin was one that was never touched by bare human hands . However I realize now in the 21st century a lot of Numismatic terms have changed .
Yeah , still trying to cope with it as I'm old school .
Anyway I would grade this coin now at MS-64+RB .

Same here. How do you explain to a newbie we find "uncirculated" coins "in circulation" all the time? It's a total oxymoron!
