Your not to far from Illinois so why not also look up coin shows there. There are 3 regular coin shows a Month in Illinois and all on Sundays. Tables are also $50 each and same size. Yes you always need additional lighting for your merchandise. Make sure all coin cases are not easily opened by customers. Put expected prices in pencil on any 2x2 or smaller flips and always tell customers prices are negotiable. Make sure you have an up to date price guide with you so you can look up any coin a customer may want to low ball you on. Many customers will simply walk by your table if no prices of any kind are shown. Even if some are shown, they will stop and look. If possibly have some 3 ringed binders with lower priced coins in those 20 slotted pages for 2x2's.
Coin shows are really vague as to what is going to sell and what never does. At some shows people bring kids and really odd and low priced items sell fast. For example those large Copper rounds with all sorts of different things on them. My Grand daughter loves those and takes an Album full of them to school. Try to have something for everyone not just expensive slabbed coins. At some shows slabbed coins sell well and at others none sell at all. If you look up coin shows in Illinois there is one in a place called Countryside. Usually from 60 to 100 tables and although most are on Sundays, in December it is a 2 day show. If you get to that one early, there is a guy with coffee and donuts and only asks for a donation.
I love coin shows and go to as many as possible. I only buy coins at a coin show.
One last bit of advise. Be careful when leave. Make sure you r not followed.

And I really mean it about being careful when leaving. If you park in a place where it is easy to see the door, that is best. Parking to far from a place where it is difficult to see from the coin show could be a not to smart thing. Not sure about where your going but around me there are security guards all around due to possible thefts. One great idea is to have a member of your family with you. This way it could free you up to go to a washroom, get a cup of coffee, etc. so your table is watched. Remember you may well be there for many hours and alone can be a pain. Also, one trick crooks have is to keep you busy at the far end of your tables and another takes something from the opposite end. Having someone with you prevents that. Do not stop anywhere after the show where your car or truck full of coins can be robbed.

Locked in a table at last nights coin club meeting I am feeling pretty exciting about it. I have about 3 weeks to get ready. Not sure how I will fill up a 8ft. table. I do have a couple coin display cases, and some trays that have their own covers. My back will be towards a wall, so I can take some extra boxes. What I started this morning. Similar to what I posted at the start of this post.    |

a lot of big money buyers. Suggested
I have coins that fall into the $40 to $100 range.
And of course some lower priced coins.
It would be nice to know what most buyers
will be looking for, I guess I will
try to take a little of everything.
Again .. I am open to any suggestions.
I did get some good ideas .. when I started this thread.

Not having enough space to display everything I take. You can't have everything for everyone. There will be people looking for things you don't have. This can be a problem. All I can say is do your best to keep an eye on things. Every dealer has that problem. Believe me the other dealers have a lot more stuff with them than they have room to display. And Carl is right about being careful when you leave. If security can walk you to your car that would be good. Once you are on your way NEVER leave your vehicle unattended for any reason. make sure your car is filled up in the morning before the show starts so you don't have to stop for gas. If you might need a restroom break on the way home, take a bottle with you. Sounds crude but you don't want to leave the car. If you want/need something to eat use the drive through. Do not think "well I'll park my car right here where I can see it and keep and eye on it while I eat." A great many dealers get ripped off that way every single year. A smash and grab can take 15 seconds or less. By the time you realize what is happening, get up and get to the door they have your stuff and are on their way. When you are getting close to home use your phone to call ahead to have people there to meet you when you arrive. DO NOT leave your vehicle unattended while you unload and take things in the house. (That's why you called ahead to make sure there is someone to watch the vehicle while you unload.) Many dealers get ripped off that way as well. They get followed all the way home and while they take their cases and lamps in (because they are on top to keep from being broken, the crooks take their cases of coins. (I know one dealer who was followed all the way from a show in OH to his home in Nebraska and they stole his coins right there in his driveway.) I know this all seems like common sense, but there are many dealer robberies every year using these techniques. If you have someone else that can travel to and from the show with you that can also be a big plus. I haven't heard about it being done lately, but at on time the trick was to make a small puncture in the dealers tire so it would go flat along the way and then rob him after he pulled over to change the tire. (And usually they had to take their stuff out of the car to get at the spare.) Edited by Conder101

I'll have a table at Jackson. The Legion has a big parking lot in the back where everyone parks. It is in full view from the door and it will be light when the show breaks up. When I started out I bought a bunch of World silver and rolls of Eagles just to fill up a case. As time goes on, you will upgrade your inventory.
Keep your cases locked and just bring out a couple of coins at a time. Its a safe show and not too hectic, but its just a best practice. Some people have stuff out as they don't have cases, but then they have to work in pairs so somebody watches their table when they get up. I'd recommend bringing a bunch of singles and 5's for change as running out is a pain, and as I've mentioned bring show lights.

I hope it goes well for you GR58! If you are still showing in the future, I will most certainly drop by one of your Michigan shows. I'm currently in China for at least a year, maybe two, but I plan on moving back to Michigan. Will be aiming for the Grand Rapids area so we won't be too far away :)
