Hi all, opinions welcome please. I have just aquired the very rare 1825 shilling with Roman 1, condition is MS62 however, and here it is, at some point in it's very past life the coin has been gilded.
In your opinion does the gilding detract from the value of this very rare coin?
Many thanks,

Julian

V@DJ, first welcome to CCF. Second, it looks like your pics didn't come through. Please add them to this thread as it can help answer your question. I will say that as a general rule, plating is considered damage and would only serve to decrease the value of a coin.

Could it have been gilded in an attempt to pass it off as the 2nd ( shield type ) George IV sovereign? I know the designs and sizes differ slightly, but the coinage was still new then and people would no doubt still be getting used to it, providing opportunities for just this type of con trick.

Hello and !

Coincraft's Catalogue values it at £150 in Fine and £700 in Very Fine. It's certainly a scarce variety, but British collectors aren't as crazy about varieties as Americans are, and George IV shillings aren't collected as extensively as, say Victorian bronze pennies, so what a collector would be prepared to pay for one might be quite another matter.

Having been gilded will have a negative effect on the value.
