The Hawaiian alphabet (piapa), was written by 19th century missionaries. The alphabet contains 12 letters: 5 vowels (a, e, i, o, u) and 7 consonants (h, k, l, m, n, p, w). Now you take a couple hundred countries over a number of centuries all having different letters, numerals and symbols it stands to reason letters and numerals on coins can look odd. A good review would be letters and meanings of the Russian language and then even more.
