I have several Galba denarii. Some of these have ugly portraits. However this newest addition for today's CNG auction has to be the king of the ugly Galba portraits I have seen...and I love it.

The portraits on Galba's Spanish denarii are some of the strangest portraits on imperial coins. This is one of those.

Galba. AD 68-69. AR Denarius (17.1mm, 3.03 g, 12h). Spanish mint (Tarraco?). Struck circa April-late AD 68. Laureate head right; globe at point of bust / Libertas standing left, holding pileus with right hand, vindicta with left. RIC I 23; RSC 118. Good Fine, toned, flatly struck.
CNG 427, Lot: 433.
From the Collection of a Texas Wine Doctor.

Interesting portrait. It kinda looks like he has been depicted with microcephaly.

Interesting looking coin, no doubt an unofficial issue.

I had a feeling I would see you post that coin

That man had some incredibly varied portraits!

Thanks for the comments everyone. I am very interested in the variety of portraits in the coinage of Galba. I now have 6 examples including this one and not one looks anything like any of the others. I will say I am not convinced that this is unofficial given the huge variation in portraits and given the fact the CNG did not label it as unofficial. There is also the fact the times were very turbulent when this coin was minted and this might have had an affect on the minting of coins. For another example I would refer to the poorly struck lifetime portraits of Julius Caesar. Many scholars believe the coinage was poorly struck because of the tremendous pressure the mints were under to produce a large volume of coins.
