I changed the lighting in my room where I look at pennies and noticed lower light seems to show better images.

It kinda looks like doubling but not sure if MD or DD.
The raised lettering is higher and creates a shadow causing me confusion.

I've not been too lucky finding any real doubling and wonder if I've been looking at them wrong with too much light?

That's Machine Doubling, since the devices are reduced in size, and it's shelflike in appearance. http://www.error-ref.com/machine-doubling/

Obviously good lighting can make it easier to spot certain errors or varieties but when you actually find a true DD you'll know. There are some minor ones that are harder to spot because it may be just a little raised line under an L or maybe some minor doubling on the bottom of the memorial or something. But if it's a DD that affects multiple devices like the date or IGWT you will know immediatly. When devices are doubled they become bigger and in some cases you can see it with your naked eye. As far as you not finding any doubled dies yet don't get discouraged and dont blame the light. They are not easy to find. There are a few other types of worthless doubling that are fairly common but a true DD is pretty rare for the most part. I didn't find my first one till 5 months after I started and it was one of the newer shield pennies. You have to remember people have been searching for these types of errors for decades so the older the coins are the more likely theyve been picked through already. That doesn't mean they aren't still out there, it just means they aren't as common as new collectors think they are. If they were, they wouldn't be some of the most expensive errors out there. Just keep that in mind. Good luck and happy hunting.
Rest in Peace

Maybe this may help get your head wrapped around the concept that MD ALWAYS REDUCES the size of the device. Notice the overall OUTSIDE WIDTH (in RED), This is consistent from one area of the device all around. In YELLOW is circled the indented portion where the die jumped and smashed the device...thereby "reducing it's size". This is more in height than width, see it better now?

Curious if its Type I or Type II? Thanks, Doug.

Thanks for the feedback! This was the best response's I've ever received from a question.

Can someone confirm what a 'device' is?

Crazyb0 - So MD decreases the lettering/numbers (devices) and true doubling, the devices would be the same or bigger?

Thanks for the encouragement for finding a DD. When I find something that looks like one, I put in coin holder and put away. I figure 90% are MD, but I keep looking. Keeps my mind busy with PTSD.

I did find the famous double ear a couple of months ago from pocket change that's in decent shape.

Thanks again Crazyb0 for your image, Waynoah83 for the encouragement, and Errers and Varietys for the link!

Thanks

Shawn
