I was quite pleased to come across this one in my grandfather's collection. Is that green on the rim of the obverse something to be concerned about (conservation-wise)?

I'm thinking AU-52. What do you think?

Note: The white streak and flecks on the reverse are artifacts of my scan, not anything on the coin.

coinhop,

I'm thinking XF with the amount of wear and hit below the eye. Yes, that "green stuff" is a concern. It appears to be PVC residue ... a known coin killer. This happens when coins are stored in PVC holders. Before sending it off to a conservator, try immersion in 100% acetone. Acetone is non-reactive to metals, so it only removes surface contamination. Then rinse with distilled water and blow dry. Let us see an "after" picture.
