King Louis XVIII gold 20 franc 1815 coin minted at Perpignan has two varieties. Mint master's mark is a bunch of grapes. One variety has the grapes hanging vertically and the other has the bunch hanging horizontally. Can any forum member enlighten me as to whether this was due to Napoleon's 100 day adventure in 1815?

@msr, first welcome to CCF. Second, it looks to me like on numista, there are separate Krause numbers for these two coins, although the "horizontal grapes" are described as a lilly flower:

Or am I not looking at the right coin? It always helps if you are able to post pics of the coin in question. If that is the correct coin, then you will see that these were minted in London, but largely melted down.

Many thanks Spence for your input. The 1815 Perpignan gold 20 francs has a "Q" mint mark. Louis XVIII started 1815 on the French throne but Napoleon escaped from Elba and took control of France for 100 days but after his deserved defeat at Waterloo King Louis returned to his throne for the remainder of 1815. Now I wonder if the 2 varieties reflect the 2 separate periods of 1815 that Louis was reigning.

Ok yes, no prob. I don't have that sort of specialized knowledge of 19th Century French numismatics, but hopefully a couple other folks will weigh in over the next few days. In any case, you have an interesting hypothesis. I wonder how responsive the mintmasters were in those days to the political winds.

Many thanks Spence for your further input. I wondered how many were minted of each variety. A quick search through 1815 Perpignan 20 francs for sale shows the grapes handing vertically much more common than grapes horizontal. (My example is hanging vertically). I have a hypothesis regarding the Perpignan mint. 1815 began as normal using the grapes hanging vertically dies but Napoleon's 100 day intervention caused those dies to be either destroyed or looted. After Louis XVIII returned later in 1815 new dies were prepared for use in the remaining periodays of 1815. These new dies were the rarer grapes horizontal type.
