Nice notch on U and maybe minor notch on T. Anybody know what happens to doubled dies when they are discovered. Any attempt made to repair them if only minor doubling.

Interesting......

I'll be curious to see what experts think.

It does look interesting, but check out the same position on all the edge of the letters. Looks like die wear on all three of the letters in GOD and most of the lower letters of WE TRUST have something going on with them also on the same locations.

I hear ya coop, seems to be a lot of die polishing lines around motto. That's what made me wonder about trying to repair doubled dies.

I don't think they try to repair them. They may clean to remove die clashes and grease, but anything else that is defective (including doubled dies) they pull from production. It would be great to get example of doubled dies that they found instantly. As it is the standard is to pull die errors.

Hi,

I am not 100% sure yet. I am struggling with this type of thing on some 2006 D and 2007 D dimes myself. One side of me wants to call it a doubled die variety and one side of me is not sure yet. I've seen what appears to be light grooves and fairly consistent notches where they should be indicating the possibility that they might be die varieties.

Let me put it this way. I won't rule it out yet but I can't get myself to take the big plunge yet and say yes.

Have Fun,
Bill

Todays dies are inexpensive, so the Mint does not repair them. Yes, you will see some abraded dies to clear die clashes, but that is about it.

This die does have movement, which is evident from the notching seen. While Die Deterioration Doubling will also give you notching, this coin does not appear to be in a later die state, so my first opinion is that it may be a doubled die, better defined as a continuous hubbed doubled die. That is where the doubled die is formed during the hubbing and is created by the pressure (of the hubbing) moving the hub to die orientation to the correct position. However, having said all that, I would not qualify it as a doubled die until an in hand examination is completed.

This is news to me. Typically one of the identifying features listed for MDD (die movement ) is that it DOESN'T show notching of the serifs. And Die Deterioration Doubling is not known for notching of the serifs as far as I know either.

What I've always seen described as tilted hub doubling.
