To me, it looks like some type of plating issue.

It looks a little bit bubbled in that area. I think I can even see Split Plate Doubling in that column. The Zinc core has been exposed.

Hey Earl where you been? Looks like most of the 3-D part of that column was polished away to me. John1

Quote: Hey Earl where you been? Trying to find something worth posting. The last couple of times I picked up pennies at the bank, I have been given rolls that someone brought in. They have obviously been searched...just hoping to find one they missed. You had any luck lately ?

I did find a nice 1998-1DER-026T, and when I looked it up I was a bit disappointed to find out it is only worth 25x grade value. Unfortunately that's only 75 cents. John1

True, but it looks so dramatic it got my adrenaline going when I first spotted it. Then I looked it up...maybe that was my mistake John1

Looks like a case of not knowing where to look for doubled columns? Just like Machine Doubling new ones will often look on the areas closest to devices. On the Memorial Cents there are 4 false double columns that are part of the design: Why just these four areas? On the Memorial building they are on the rows that have more columns behind them: But when searching for extra columns, the areas to look for these is not near the columns, but in the centers of the bays between the columns. Here is a look at what happened during the hubbing of this die. The alignment was not correct when it was hubbed: But just the last two bays were showing the strong affects. Seems that the correct hubbing removed all but the last two bays that were affected. But while looking at these, not something. How the extra columns would have appeared in the centers of the bays, not on the edges of the columns. When looking at this coin note that area the area the OP's was looking at was next to the column and irregular in shape. Most likely this was cause die die wear and a die polishing that altered the outside edge of the bay. The bays are part of the field area on a die. Thus they stick up like a comb, where as the columns are set deeper into the die. So any isolated polishing on an area could alter the bay leaving a line next to the bay column. Also keep in mind the clash lines that happen on that area are concentrated because of the shoulder and the 'TY' on LIBERTY: So with this area part of a targeted area of clash removal, the bays will be polished down a bit, making the area in question what was worked over, raised on coins struck. So to get more family with extra columns check out the listings for the 1994 LMC on Wexler's site: http://doubleddie.com/352322.html1994 1¢ WDDR-002 1994 1¢ WDDR-004 1994 1¢ WDDR-006 1994 1¢ WDDR-007 1994 1¢ WDDR-008 1994 1¢ WDDR-009 1994 1¢ WDDR-010 You can spend a few minutes studying these, Or countless hours looking in the wrong places. Your choice. CoopHome : Extra Columns

I am referring to the line at the left of column 2, not the column (which is supposed to be there) to the right of column 1.
