Looks to be a dropped letter. There appears to be an upside down "R" on the neck of Washington. It matches with the "R" in LIBERTY only upside down.2007-P-Idaho-Quarter---Dropped-Letter-

Sure does look like it. Very nice find. May think about having it slabbed.

Hi,

It's a partial dropped letter. The entire R is not visible. It is a reasonable example but wouldn't be worth the expense of slabbing. This is an example where the entire R is visible. I don't remember off the top of my head which States quarter this was on.

Thanks,
Bill

The grease that creates the struck thru grease errors sometimes mixes with other dirt and gets compacted and hardened in a letter cavity on the die. As coins are struck this compacted dirt, which is shaped like the letter, comes loose and falls out onto the next planchet and is struck into the coin. The dirt ends up coming loose from the coin and falls away creating the dropped letter error on the coin.

pyrbob, that was beautifully explained. From my understanding, that is exactly what happens. I figured it was a dropped letter (partial). Just thought I would post for those that have never seen one. Don't see these too often. Thanks for all the replies.

I feel that if this "R" debris would have fallen in the field somewhere, like foundinrolls coin, it would have been a complete letter. It fell on a concave device, in this case, Washington's neck.

Hi,

Mine is on Washington's neck as well:-) It is possible to effect any portion of a coin.

Have Fun,
