FVRIVS RVFVS Pillar of the Community United States 3439 Posts	Posted 09/01/2018 4:03 pm I finally landed an Artuqids bronze on ebay Nothing really really special about it ...... other than the pricetag of 14 euros and the image of Gabriel on the obverse ! And as we all know ...... Gabriel was the key figure in bringing pages of the Qu'ran down from heaven to the prophet Muhammed A quicky search doesn't seem to show many of this type so I don't have a good attribution for it (I'm sure that will end soon) For some (strange) reason I can't help but be reminded of an episode of Seinfeld by this coin Obv. S/S 9; Album 1821.1; BMC Oriental III, 332. A scarcer type, listed as rare by Album, about 15 examples turn up at acsearch.com. https://www.acsearch.info/search.ht...us=1&order=0¤cy=usd&company= Translation: "king of the commanders Muhammad / son of Qara Arslan son of / Da'ud son of Sukma- / -n son of Artuq the victor"; in margin, "the Imam / al-Mustadi bi-amr Allah ('Abbasid caliph) / "commander of the faithful". In the obverse margin is the date written out in words. Qara Arslan (Persian, "Black Lion") Da'ud (Arabic, "David") al-Mustadi bi-amr Allah (Arabic, "Who Seeks Light by the Command of Allah", reigned 1170-1180) Sukman and Artuq are Turkish names but I'm unsure of their translation/ meaning.
