Can't figure this one out. Burnished gold swath on Kennedy's head. No wear and clearly not an addition (e.g., paint or other additive). Completely in line with surrounding profile. Chemically induced or a minting error of some kind? Many thanks.

Your coin is stained and it happened after it left the Mint, I am not going to take a guess what could have caused it as it could be a number of things.Keep the search going.

Soak it overnight in acetone, I suspect that is paint, possibly a rub off of a wet coin. If paint it should come off within a few hours, if not minutes. If "Goldtone ", what watches are coated with, it will take 24 hours maybe. But yes, it is considered damaged.

It's a stain. It's Post Strike Damage (it happened after it left the U.S. Mint).

It may have sat in a bag with another coin over it. As the coin aged and didn't move, the coin covering that area prevented the toning on that area.
