I saw this in the Numismatik Naumann auction catalogue and knew I wanted it. It is listed in RIC II Part one as R3, one example known. This is not the RIC plate coin but it is (no surprise) a double die match to that coin. My assumption is that this is the second known of its type. It will take an honoured position in my 12 Caesars set.

I am very excited to have won this coin.

VESPASIAN (69-79). Denarius. Ephesus.
(3.00 g.17 mm.)
Obv: IMP CAESAR VESPAS AVG COS III TR P P P.
Laureate head right.
Rev: PACI AVGVSTAE.
Victory advancing right, holding wreath and palm frond; monogram to right.
RICē 1425.
Condition: Very fine.

Wow, that's a great find. Congrats. You're gonna have start stacking the Caesars in the set...must be at least a 20 Caesars set by now. (well, okay, 12 Caesars - but quite a few more coins than that)

Thanks Bob. With this coin I am now up to 38 coins of the 12 Caesars. This includes 36 denarii, 1 cistophorus, and 1 Alexandrian diobol.

Congratulations indeed.

Well acquired - and apparently a lovely addition to your already lovely collection.

One of the greatest strengths of the CCF is that we are able to support each other collecting endeavors - even without any expertise in the topic being shared.

In that spirit I submit this reply - congratulations indeed.

Many thanks for the kind words @nickelsearcher. Boards like these are very important, especially when the hobby can be so solitary sometimes.

very nice coin , mention S in RIC, very good deal . congrats.
I was checking in RIC volume 2 and I think the right reference is : RIC2,Vespasianus 333, it is a coin of Group III , AD 71 ( COSIII ),coins of Asia Minor , (Ephesus , Byzantium , Philippi ).
The monogram at right is in principle the mintmark , but detailled pictures are needed to read it .Normally it is Ephesus .
The reverse is reading : Augustae Paci,Paci Augustae doesn't exist with this obverse .
But it is a very nice, remarkeble coin . albert

Sorry Albert but that is not correct. The obverse legend is IMP CAESAR VESPAS AUG COS III TR P PP. If you look up the legend in RIC II Part one it gives the refs 1423-34. Of those the only one that fits is 1425. It is group 5 with the Ephesus by mintmark. You can see it on my coin near the bottom of the reverse just right of victory. This has been confirmed by a friend of mine on forum who is an expert in Flavian coinage.

As for the Paci legend, RIC mentions the the legend begins in the top right of the reverse. In addition there is a coin with victory left with the legend starting on the left. My friend calls it RIC 1425 var because it is unpublished. He has one and does one other person I know. So far there are only 2 examples known for each of 1425 and 1425 var.

In addition check your RIC II and look up plate 77 near the back of the volume. Now check the image for 1425 and you will see my coin is a double die match for the plate coin.

thanks for your post.

Sorry Albert I thought you had the new RIC. Yes I am using the 2007 edition.

Old edition RIC 333 is New edition 1431. But this is not my coin because it has the EPE mintmark and mine does not. Mine has the graphic mintmark instead.

I do appreciate your help with this.
