These two 1809 crowns, both from Madrid, have very similar designs. However, one is marked "8" Reales; the other, "20" Reales.

The 8 Reales weighs 27.31 grams, the 20 Reales is a nearly identical 27.35 grams.

They are different currencies. At that time in spain there were two types of "real". The "real de plata" was of silver and the "real de vellon" was of billon ( heavily debased silver ).

I have read of the exchange rate being 2:1 and also 2.5:1, but it would not surprise me if it varied enormously due to local economic conditions.

Your 20 real coin is billon. The colour is significantly different from the silver coin.

If anyone can recommend a good simple book on the history of Spainish coins I would be very interested to hear it. ( Please note I cannot read Spanish, only English or French ).

By the introduction of the real de vellon by king Jose Napoleon in 1808, 1 real de plata (silver) was indeed worth 2.5 reales de vellon (billon).
As both your coins have the same value: 8 reales de plata = 20 reales de vellon, their intrinsic value is the same. They are both struck in 0.903 silver and they must have the same weight.
Numista (and numismaster) gives 27.07 grams for the 8 reales and 27.08 grams for the 20 reales.

Thank you both.

The discussion led me to this web page,

http://www.coinfactswiki.com/wiki/S...al_de_vellon

where it says, regarding the 0ne real de vellon: "Specification: 1.35 g, .903 fine silver, .039 troy oz ASW."
