Not an "S". It's just some type of staining.

What you see on the E is just a straight-on hit, a coin-coin bag contact most lokely. The area just west of the vest may be die damage but not from an S or other letter. I thought at first it may be part of a die clash that wasn't fully polished off, but looking at the clash overlay there is nothing of a reverse detail within that area. So if it is raised, it just may be a die gouging. Remember the mirror image of a die, it's backwards, the field of the coin is the dies surface.

@Aizen, using overlays as shown by @crazyb0 is the best way to investigate potential die clashes.
