I agree the bars on the left side of the shield make that the best place to look. Though I see 14/15 c. denars with fleur de lis or double crosses on the right side of the shield (from a quick scan through numista). So, maybe another place in the Hungarian sphere of influence?
There are Polish denars under Louis of Hungary (1370-82), Jadwiga (1383-99) and Wladyslaw of Varna (1434-44) with the Hungarian shield on them, but I could not find a match with this type in Gumowski.

Wild guess: Serbia or thereabouts?
Reason: I can't make sense of the legend at the left of the shield if I assume that it is Latin, but it makes perfect sense in Cyrillic as BωΔ - part of the word "voivode" (or however they spell it). Sadly the legend on the right side is harder to read; my speculative reading is TωMAC "Thomas", but it could easily be something else entirely.
But yeah, if you can find a "Voivode Thomas" (or, more likely, something similar - Tomislav?) in those parts, that might be a plausible candiate for this coin.
(And no, I cannot read the other side. TOPO[H?]MH something... makes no sense in either Latin or Cyrillic, even accounting for the fact that Cyrillic H was an I sound at the time.)

Or Wallachia (=Romania as suspected by the OP)? This coin has the same shield, I think, with horizontal bars on left, and something like Greek theta on right. Also the small rectangle with cross inside on reverse (though it has one, not two): https://en.numista.com/catalogue/pieces115840.htmlI wasn't as brave as you to attempt the legends. I don't think they match, but I agree with you that that they don't look like latin.

@wallet, sorry to be late to the party, but as usual @j1m and @tdz have led you in good direction. I agree with mid to late 14th Century Wallachia. However, I'm not 100% sure on the specific ruler who authorized its striking. Numista is a bit sparse, so perhaps you can find someone with this reference: MBR = Luchian, O. (1977), 'Yara RomāneascI', in Buzdugan, G., Luchian, O. and Oprescu, G. G., Monede /i bancnote romāne/ti, Bucharest, 1-35 Also, here is a link to an online reference that may be helpful until you get access to the MBR: http://numismatics.org/wikiuploads/...escu2002.pdfFor comparison, here are pics of my ducat from Mircea I attributed as MBR 17,83 and dating to 1383-1386 AD. One thing that is particularly odd are the double rectangles with crosses. I haven't seen that before. These seem to be universally poorly struck and so I'm thinking your coin was actually double-struck, with about a 90 degree rotation on the rev and no rotation on the obv.

I... think I found it? It's the 3rd coin down here under "tip 1b", enlarged photo here. If so, it's an issue of Mircea cel Batran (1386-1418). Go ahead and post it in the 166 Days of Yakko's World Coins thread today (as long as you can make it in the next two hours) - the readers there would probably enjoy seeing an actual coin from Wallachia!

Thank you all! A really good discussion. I had during this find similar shields but the two rectangle with cross was the tricky part. Very good!
