Very attractive. I'll venture AU-55, very likely higher. Certainly little experience with these other than the general design.

Mrzllewellyn-
Fascinating read. I love learning the history behind the coins.
Thank you.

The rim bumps hurt it. I suspect it may be ex-jewelry.
I'd give it "AU details" grade.
Nice pick up!

If I'm correct they made these (and the ten dollar) for just three years. I may have to try to pick up another one or three. I need to find a good source for them. I'm not a big ebay fan and I only buy raw coins. Quick question- on NGC's website, for example, they make a point of stating "no mintmark" despite that there is no version of the coin that year with one.. I was just wondering why they do this? My assumption is fraud prevention, so a fraudster doesn't try to scam somebody by saying they have a "rare" example with a mintmark.

These gold coins are worth only bullion unless they are MS63 or better, they also in lower grades have no markets except for bullion. These gold coins were struck by RCM in Ottawa with no mint marks

AU details It's not just worn it's damaged a little. Spot is about $285US for these. If that's what you paid you did very well as these, in similar condition, currently go for about a hundred US bucks higher on ebay. Unlikely you'll be able to complete a Canadian gold collection at such deeply discounted prices.

edge marks in this series is common, remember they were in bags for the better part of a century. I have many in original sealed certified hand selected cases and both hologram stickers still on them, with edge marks like that. They are not pure gold actually, 80% - 20% copper. What is spot price for you... I think AU as well, due to the excessive bag marks. Its a easy sell at around $450 to $500. If you get it slabbed you will attract a larger market. Some collectors only buy slapped or ones with COA's (to avoid fakes). 1914 is the sought after date for the $5 and 1912 is the sought after date for the $10. All values in CAD.
If you got it for under $400, great buy!
