Can anyone tell me the scarcity scale? I am not pulling anything up and I believe this is the scale David Schenkman created for his Virginia Tokens. I do not have a Virginia Token guide, but am curious to equate the Schenkman Scarcity scale to other rarity scales.

Thanks in advance for any feedback.

I can't help you with the scale you are referring to In Alpert and Elmsn Tokens and medals book the give a general R-1 is based on 100,000 known examples R-10 is one or two are known. Rarity isn't what a price is based on. since if no one wants it it won't sell at any price. In US sales tax and stamps by Malehorn and Davenport it is the same 1-10 scale only now that it is known that there are millions of some of the tax tokens out there the rarity numbers have been revised for the lower end of the scale which includes almost all but a hand full of the since the were printed some in the millions and multiple millions.
R-1 5001, R-2 2001-5000, R-3 501-2000,R-4 101-500, R-5 51-100, R-6 21-50, R-7 11-20, R-8 5-10, R-9 2-4, R-10 one Don't know if that will help My other token books sort of dance around the rarity issue. Other than the CWT's I don't think it really means much as most dealers and antique shops tend to over price as does ebay and some other sites.

Thanks Circus : I am asking this question because on the tokencatalog site I saw this listed
TC-359137
R.C. BARCLEY BOOK SELLER & BINDER / MAIN ST / NORFOLK / VA
Schenkman Scarcity Scale E/I - and made of Brass (VA3680-6b) ... Schenkman Scarcity Scale H/K.

So I am trying to find out what the scale is. The bolding is mine.

It certainly piqued my interest. The token itself does as well because I have a large portion of my family there. I see one on the Bay up for grabs, but the jury is still out for me on getting it.

I thought it would be interesting to have another scale to add to all the others that are out there. Just simple curiosity on my part since I often enjoy the discovery and research more than the actual token or coin.

Thanks for looking Circus. I found it in 3rd edition Rulau Standard Catalog after reading you last post. You pointed me in the direction of going farther back in time to the 1850's - comes in copper and brass.

Still looking for the Schenkman Scarcity scale too. That letter based scale has me quite curious to find it.

Looking forward to seeing your next token post in the morning.

So the scarcity scale is a VALUE scale. It would appear I interpreted the word scarcity to mean numbers known vs. value.

Feuchtwanger thank you for that info and if I may ask your source? Always looking to add another reference guide to the library.

Well, nevermind, I guess I need 50 posts for that. Even though I've been a member since 2010. Well here's one more!
