Acidic substance ate that sucker...

Besides which, that term is a bit of a misnomer. They adjust the dies all the time, they fall out of alignment due to the high pressures involved, become loose, etc. Most of these "Die alignment errors" are nothing more than extreme grease filled struck coins.

Note the rim are missing on a coin. Even a Struck Through Grease error will show the strength on the rim.

But a coin that is tapered will show weakness on the design and also on the highest parts of the devices.
