That is coin contact. The EPU on the shield cents is incuse. So a contact mark that doesn't reach the bottom of the device, will look like it flows behind it. But it doesn't. It is on the surface of the coin. Rotate the coin 90 degrees and look again:

Coop... your example looks like the mark was on top of the "B" and then goes under the "B" at the bottom. Do Incused coins have value? I ask because I have other that are kind of weird, but I will post those as I go. Thanks for your help.

Plus, I reported the picture so you can get a better look, but I tried turning 90 degrees, but nothing changed.

Normally, I have found that when you adjust the coin or the angle of the hand microscope, you can change the light to allow shadows and image to change.

I replaced the picture I posted But it also looks like it with a better angle on the coin. I have also found that when I adjust the light on a great coin that's perfect, I don't see this type of image that looks like a MD on the coin. But trying to determine if it's a DD or a MD is not easy. I have seen DD that look like MD, but were called DD's, and visa versa.

But I will keep looking!

Oh and Coop. is it worth my time to try and sell MD's on ebay for cheap?

Thanks again for your help!

All the Shield cents have incuse EPUs. The damage is coin contact on the surface of the coin, but on this one the contact is so deep it affected the bottom of the device. Thus making it look like it was raised. Its not. If you use a lower angle of light and rotate your coin, you will see what I'm saying. They are called bag marks from the days when coins were carried in bags. The the result is the same. Contact from one coin dropped against another. No premium.

People sell them to the newbies on ebay. But to ease your own conscience list them as machine doubled not not a doubled die. If they know that up front, the coin is as advertised when you sell it. I wouldn't sell them. (I guess the bottom feeders that have irritated the new ones common here with and me having to tell them they are worth face, still prevents me from selling them) The negatives you can get to me aren't worth besmearing my name. Sorry...I added to my last post! I will try not to do that again, and just reply instead of adding to the post. Can you please define EPU?
