I am going through large sack of wheat pennies—i know very general question but what would be considered a more valuable coin—a penny that is a higher grade but has green/black areas vs one that is lower grade but no green/black areas —thanks

A damaged LWC, by black and green corrosion(DANGER!)

Maybe need to set the green aside, they may be verdigris or bronze disease, the latter is a coin virus, deadly and is passed to other coins in contact! I usually toss them in the trash or my next bank dump, get rid of 'em. The blacks may clean up with acetone, but if these are common date, ain't worth messing with. Those won't affect any others, the black is usually hand oils and grime. LWCs are sold to dealers for 2-2.5 cents a piece. Common dates are the P mint mid-late 30's and 40's, and the 50's D mints. Older dates than 34 should be checked for dates, most Mintmarked coins are saveable, P mints not so much, depends on date.

You are right, and only a general answer can be given. It must be approached on a coin-to-coin basis. The year and mintmark can make a huge difference and the type of damage/corrosion (if any) will also make a big difference.

Generally speaking, in my view corrosion is worse than wear. But of course a tiny spot is not as bad as a completely worn coin. So it is subjective how much corrosion will cancel out the less wear.

I would rather have an honest worn wheatie than a strong detailed one with corrosion . However you must take into consideration the rarity of the Cent in question .

Worn over corroded. However, depends on the amount of wear also.

For me, yes, if it's a common date. The heck with melt value.
