Having trouble finding the reference for this colonial. Also I'd be interested in finding out about attribution books for these as I come across them every once in a while. Any help will be appreciated. Thanks!

Well it is a counterfeit, but not a Machin's. Here is one book that covers counterfeits that circulated in America, https://www.amazon.com/Forgotten-Co...p/0873412109. The Whitman Encyclopedia of Colonial and Early American Coins has a section on the Machin's Mills coins.
